Sunday October 15th marks the end of Diversity Week at WVU. On that day we will celebrate the joy of inclusion of persons who identify as LGBTQ, their friends and their families.
Dr. Michael Adee, ruling elder in the PC(USA) will be the guest preacher for worship that morning. He is the director of the Global Faith and Justice Project at San Francisco Theological Seminary and lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. (www.lgbtglobalfaith.org) Dr. Adee is a human rights advocate and has worked in the LGBT and HIV-AIDS communities for the past 30 years. He began doing international LGBT faith and justice work in 2012. As the former executive director of More Light Presbyterians, he directed the successful ordination policy change campaign for LGBT ministers in the Presbyterian Church (USA). The intersection of faith and human rights is his area of interest and specialization. Dr. Adee’s sermon title is Faith + Love x 3.
On that same Sunday afternoon Dr. Adee will be the keynote presenter for the event Welcoming LGBTQ: The Joy of Inclusion to be held at our church at 3:30. This event offered to other churches and members of the community will highlight how First Presbyterian became and continues to be an openly welcoming church, and the importance of this stance.
We are proud of the Welcome Statement which our church adopted fifteen years ago in 2002, and of the conscientious attempts by our church to live into that Statement. We believe that we have a compelling story to share – one that would benefit other churches, if they heard it, and one that would benefit persons who identify as LGBT, their friends and families if the story were adopted by other churches.
Please make every attempt to attend worship that Sunday and to attend the event in the afternoon. Invite your friends and families. Not only will you enjoy participating, it is important that persons from the community see and experience through conversations that the members of FPC are in strong support of our openly welcoming stance. You will be the first to view the premier showing of the video which highlights church members sharing their thoughts and feelings about FPC. There won’t be popcorn, but there will be cookies.
