How We Work Together
What is distinctive about the Presbyterian Church?
Presbyterians are distinctive in two major ways: they adhere to a pattern of religious thought known as Reformed theology and utilize a form of government that stresses the active, representational leadership of both ministers and church members. For more information: http://www.pcusa.org/101/
Membership at First Presbyterian
We welcome into membership of First Presbyterian Church anyone who professes Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and desires to follow in the way of Christ. New members are received in the following ways: Letter of Transfer for those who are members of another Presbyterian church or a church of another denomination that grants letters of transfer; Profession of Faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and baptism (if one has not been previously baptized) for anyone who has not previously belonged to a church; Reaffirmation of Faith for those who belong to a church that does not grant letters of transfer to other denominations or for those whose membership in another church has lapsed.
A faithful member of Christ's church accepts Christ's call to be involved responsibly in the ministry of his Church. Such involvement includes: proclaiming the good news; taking part in the common life and worship of a particular church; praying and studying Scripture and the faith of the Christian Church; supporting the work of the church through the giving of money, time and talents; participating in the governing responsibilities of the church; demonstrating a new quality of life within and through the church; responding to God's activity in the world through service to others; living responsibly in the personal, family, vocational, political, cultural, and social relationships of life; and working in the world for peace, justice, freedom, and human fulfillment.
